Conference Announcements: Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance; Queen Mary, London Conference on “Authority in a Transnational Age”

1) IBEI (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals) and ESADEgeo (ESADE Business School’s Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics) are organizing the second edition of the Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance, an international workshop to discuss the institutional design of global governance, on 9 & 10 January 2014. The workshop brings together scholars from international relations, international law and related disciplines; its focus this year is on networks in global governance. The aim is to examine the potential and limitations of network approaches, as well as the challenges that networked governance at the global level can pose in terms of effectiveness, accountability and democracy. Confirmed keynote speakers include Deborah Avant (University of Denver), Miles E. Kahler (University of California San Diego) and Magnus Thor Torfasson (Harvard Business School) as well as Narcís Serra (former Spanish Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister) and Javier Solana (former NATO Secretary General and EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy). 2) The Centre for Law and Society in a Global Context, at Queen Mary,  University of London, is hosting a Modern Law Review Seminar, on 8-9  November 2013, on the theme: ‘Authority in a Transnational Age’. The  conference offers a multi-disciplinary inquiry – combining philosophy,  sociology, anthropology and history – into how the increasingly transnational context of regulation challenges the concept of authority. Speakers are: Leslie Green, Michel Troper, Matthias Kumm, Neil Walker, Nico Krisch, Paul Schiff Berman, Sally Falk Moore, Roger Cotterrell, Werner Menski, Patrick Glenn, Horatia Muir Watt and Gralf-Peter Calliess. Announcements and Events: Conferences in Copenhagen and Cagliari

1.  The iCourts & Freedom Rights Project, Copenhagen announces a “Conference on the Future Role of the European Court of Human Rights” to be held 15 November 2013. The conference addresses the question of what the role of the ECtHR should – and could – be in the contemporary and future protection of human rights in Europe.  It brings together a distinct group distinguished European judges and renowned scholars from the field of human rights to debate these questions and suggest ways forward for the ECtHR. 2. The University of Cagliari announces the conference, “Natural Resources Grabbing: Erosion or Legitimate Exercise of State Sovereignty?,” to be held in Cagliari, Italy, 4-5 October 2013. Introducing Sadie Blanchard: EJIL:Talk! Associate Editor

Sadie BlanchardOver the next week or so, we will be announcing some exciting additions to the EJIL:Talk! team. Today, we are delighted to welcome Sadie Blanchard as Associate Editor of EJIL:Talk! Sadie is a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law. In 2012-2013 she was Law Clerk to Judge Charles N. Brower of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal, assisting with ICSID and ad hoc investor-State arbitrations. Previously she practiced international arbitration at King & Spalding in Paris. Sadie holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and is a member of the New York bar.

In addition to contributing her own posts, Sadie will work with the Editors of the blog in reviewing and editing posts submitted by guest contributors. She will assist in organizing events such as book discussions or discussion of EJIL articles and will compile a weekly post containing announcements.

2013 SIEL/CUP Prize for an Essay in International Economic Law

The Society of International Economic Law and Cambridge University Press have established a prize for the best essay submitted on any topic in any field of international economic law. The competition is open to current undergraduate and graduate students and those who have graduated from a university or other tertiary education institution no earlier than five years before the submission deadline. Announcements: New Journal, Calls for Papers, Conferences

1) The Third Annual Junior Faculty Forum for International Law will be convened at the University of Melbourne on July 7, 8 and 9, 2014. The Forum is led by Anne Orford of the University of Melbourne Law School, JHH Weiler of the NYU School of Law, and Dino Kritsiotis of the University of Nottingham School of Law. The Forum is designed to assist junior faculty, i.e. those within the first six years of their academic careers, with their research by staging an annual competition in which six to nine individuals will be selected and asked to make presentations to the Forum in a given year. These presentations will then be paired with senior international legal scholars, who will comment on each of the presentations given to the Forum, so that the papers are eventually worked up and prepared for publication in the European Journal of International Law. The deadline for submission of applications is December 1, 2013.

2) Hart Publishing has announced that the  Journal on the Use of Force and International Law – the first peer-reviewed journal covering all aspects of the law governing the use of force, as distinct from other areas of international law relating to security issues, such as International Humanitarian Law or International Criminal Law – will be launched in 2014. In addition to publishing research of the highest quality and impact, of both a theoretical and more practical nature, the Journal will support the conducting of research, through a digest of state practice on the use of force which will act as a key means of assessing the development of customary international law in the area.  For information on how to submit articles to the Journal, see here.

3) The British Institute of International and Comparative Law will be running a new four day programme (23-26 September 2013), called International Law in Practice. Led by many of the Institute’s leading researchers and practitioners, the course will provide a broad introduction to key issues in international and comparative law – from public to private and from commercial to human rights. The course is aimed at those in the early years of legal practice , those commencing legal careers in governmental and non-governmental organisations and students who are about to commence a postgraduate degree in aspects of international law. The registration deadline is 16 August 2013.

4) The Georg-August-University of Goettingen Institute for International Law and European Law announces the conference, “Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights – Effects and Implementation,” to be held in Goettingen, Germany on 20-21 September 2013. The conference will bring together academics and legal practitioners, including judges of the European Court of Human Rights, Constitutional Court judges from different countries, as well as practitioners to consider new ways of enhancing the interplay between the Courts jurisprudence and domestic implementation. Event and Announcements: Conferences in Mumbai and Warsaw and Calls for Papers

1. Students for the Promotion of International Law (SPIL) Mumbai will organize its annual event, the 5th Government Law College International Law Summit, from 31st January – 2nd February, 2014. Law schools from around the world are invited to participate. The Summit will include lectures, panel discussion, and two competitions: the Judgment Deliberation Competition and the Treaty Appreciation Competition. In addition, SPIL Mumbai calls for papers from students, professors, practitioners, and scholars, on the theme of this year’s Summit, international investment law.

2. SPIL Mumbai also calls for original academic work on contemporary developments in Public International Law for its yearly publication, the International Law Annual, which comprises literature on all aspects of international law. Possible forms include short articles, analytic works on landmark cases, interviews with legal luminaries on contemporary issues, discussions and analysis on international legislation, and book reviews.

3. The Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the COST Action IS1003 announce the conference Constitutionalisation and Fragmentation of International Law Revisited, to take place in Warsaw 18-19 November 2013. The conference organizers also announce a call for papers. Announcement: Workshop at Michigan

On November 14–15, 2013, the University of Michigan Law School will host the Second Annual ASIL–ESIL–Rechtskulturen Workshop on International Legal Theory. It is a collaboration between Michigan Law School, the Interest Groups on International Legal Theory of the American and European Societies of International Law, and the Rechtskulturen Program, an initiative of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin at Humboldt University Law School. The principal aim of this collaboration is to facilitate frank discussion among legal scholars from diverse backgrounds and perspectives on the fundamental theoretical questions that confront the discipline today.
